India’s Standing Committee on Finance has scheduled the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA) to give oral evidence on Virtual Digital Assets (VDAs) on Wednesday, 16 September 2026, according to a Lok Sabha Secretariat notice dated 3 September. The sitting will begin at 1100 hours in Committee Room D of the Parliament House Annexe in New Delhi as part of the panel’s study, "A Study on Virtual Digital Assets (VDAs) and Way Forward." The hearing follows the cancellation of an earlier session scheduled for 27 August and is expected to provide an important indication of the government’s position before the committee finalises its standalone VDA report. India taxes VDA gains at 30% and applies 1% Tax Deducted at Source (TDS), while trading through platforms registered with the Financial Intelligence Unit-India (FIU-IND) is permitted. As of mid-2026, 54 Virtual Digital Asset Service Providers (VDASPs) were registered with FIU-IND under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), although policy researchers estimate that 91.5% of Indian crypto trading volume was conducted on offshore platforms as of October 2025. The committee is likely to examine regulatory responsibility, asset classification and measures to address offshore activity. The DEA’s testimony will not produce legislation or a vote, and no date has been announced for the standalone report.
