The New England Patriots agreed to a four-year, $135 million contract extension with Christian Gonzalez, making him the NFL’s highest-paid cornerback, multiple media outlets reported late Monday night. The deal reportedly includes $102 million guaranteed and surpasses the four-year, $132 million extension Seattle Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon agreed to in mid-August, including $101 million guaranteed. The agreement was reached two days before New England and Seattle were scheduled to meet in a season-opening Super Bowl rematch at Seattle. Gonzalez, 24, missed two weeks of training camp in August with a leg injury but had returned to full strength for two weeks. The 2023 first-round pick from Oregon has overcome an injury-shortened rookie season and established himself as a key Patriots defender.
