Former Shanxi governor Jin Xiangjun was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve by a Chinese court over corruption involving more than 148 million yuan ($22.05 million). The court found that Jin used a series of senior local positions across Chinese cities and provinces between 2004 and 2025 to assist organizations and individuals with business operations, project contracts and job promotions in exchange for money and assets. Jin was investigated by China’s anti-graft watchdog in April 2025, admitted guilt and expressed remorse during the proceedings. The court also stripped him of political rights for life and ordered all his personal property confiscated. Under Chinese law, a suspended death sentence provides a two-year reprieve and is typically converted to life imprisonment if the sentence is not carried out.
