Seven dormant Bitcoin wallets containing 50 BTC each were activated on Sept. 5, 2026, after 16.5 years, renewing attention on early mining rewards potentially linked to Satoshi Nakamoto. Galaxy Research estimates that 21,922 of the 33,995 remaining unspent 50 BTC coinbase outputs, totaling 1.096 million BTC, were mined by Satoshi. That would represent 64.5% of the 1.699 million BTC still held in unspent 50 BTC outputs. The figures cover rewards issued before Bitcoin's first halving on Nov. 28, 2012, when miners received 50 BTC per block. Galaxy said Bitcoin also recently recorded its fourth-highest daily transaction count, with 893,391 transactions above the 99th percentile of its historical range. Most of the 172,042 early 50 BTC coinbase outputs that were spent, or 83.5%, were used before 2014. Reports identify the Patoshi miner, which mined about 1.1 million Bitcoin during 2009-2010, as widely believed to be Satoshi Nakamoto. Its apparent shutdown in May 2010, declining mining pace and lack of spending have led analysts to suggest the coins were accumulated to support and protect the young network, making future spending of the remainder unlikely.
