Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed it captured an American unmanned submersible near the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz, but the U.S. military said the vessel malfunctioned and was an older model carrying no sensitive data, classified sonar or radar equipment. U.S. Navy Captain Tim Hawkins said the drone had been surveying regional waters in support of ongoing operations and that American operations in the area continued. Iranian state media outlet Fars published videos and images purporting to show the vessel out of the water, while Iranian media identified it as a Dive-LD autonomous undersea vehicle made by Anduril, with each unit costing $2.5 million, according to DefenseScoop in 2024. The reported seizure followed new U.S.-Iran attacks in the Persian Gulf and came amid earlier disputes over unmanned vessels, regional military activity and Iran’s claims of control over the Strait of Hormuz. The strait is an international transit passage through which about 20% of the world’s oil supply moves daily.
