President Donald Trump’s approval rating fell to 36% in the latest NBC News Decision Desk poll, down one percentage point from the spring survey and the lowest level recorded in the poll. Disapproval rose to 64%, also a poll high. Republican support weakened to 80% from 83%, while the share of Republicans who strongly approve fell to 41% from 52%, dropping below 50% for the first time in the NBC poll. The survey was conducted from Aug. 20 through Sept. 1, compared with the spring poll conducted in March and April. Trump’s handling of the Iran War drew particularly weak ratings, with 31% approving and 69% disapproving, compared with 33% and 67% respectively in the spring. Only 30% of Republicans strongly approved of his handling of the war, down 18 points, while strong approval among MAGA Republicans fell 21 points to 43%. The conflict has contributed to higher gasoline prices, and Trump has indicated he could declare it over soon while promising gas prices will fall below $2 afterward. Meanwhile, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:SPY) was up 12.1% year-to-date, and the key market index reached all-time highs last month. The report notes that a strong stock market alone does not determine the health of the economy or the political credit Trump receives for market performance.
