Taiwan stocks swung nearly 490 points on September 9 before a late rally in optics and printed circuit board shares lifted the TAIEX 77.58 points, or 0.16%, to 47,183.36. Turnover reached NT$773.506 billion, approximately $24.6 billion. The index opened strongly and reached 47,548.26 before falling to 47,060.78 as heavyweight shares weakened. TSMC reversed lower to close at NT$2,465, while Quanta Computer rose 4.27% to NT$342 and United Microelectronics gained to NT$141.5. The electronics sub-index rose 0.24%, but the financial sub-index fell 1.47%; the TPEx, Taiwan's over-the-counter market, gained 0.22%. The three major institutional investors recorded combined net buying of NT$22.081 billion, including NT$20.924 billion from foreign investors, who extended their buying streak to four sessions. Foreign funds bought more than 140,000 combined lots of panel makers Innolux and AUO while selling financial shares heavily. Foreign index-futures short positions fell by 1,196 lots but remained at 81,000 contracts, indicating continued hedging. Analysts identified 47,500 points as resistance and 47,000 as near-term support, with U.S. CPI data due on September 11 and the Federal Reserve's September rate decision likely to keep investors cautious.
