India’s BSE Sensex rose about 0.2% to close at 74,902.6 on Thursday, ending a three-day losing streak as bargain hunters returned after the recent sell-off. The index had traded nearly flat around 74,732 earlier in the session, while volatility increased near the close because of key monthly derivative expiry and a new closing auction mechanism. Brent crude remained above $100 a barrel amid escalating Middle East tensions, raising concerns about India’s import bill, inflation, economic growth and corporate margins. Banking, power, energy and selected heavyweight stocks supported the rebound, while metals, pharmaceuticals and technology shares declined. The rupee had weakened to around 95.10 per U.S. dollar on Wednesday despite intervention by the Reserve Bank of India, and investors remained cautious ahead of U.S. inflation data and the Federal Reserve’s September policy meeting.
