India's food regulator has told the Supreme Court it is open to imposing stricter front-of-pack warning labels than previously proposed, including warnings for products high in just one ingredient. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India last month proposed red hexagonal labels for products exceeding limits in at least two of three categories: added sugar, salt or saturated fat, with stricter requirements planned for a second phase. The regulator's revised position followed criticism from judges and health activists that the phased approach could delay or weaken the rules. The more than $100 billion packaged-food industry, represented by the All India Food Processors’ Association, is challenging the plan and seeking further scientific review, consideration of Indian dietary patterns and calculations based on serving size rather than 100 grams. The Supreme Court is hearing the industry challenge alongside pleas from health activists amid a wider nationwide food-safety crackdown.
