Ant International, Visa and Mastercard are developing a Know-Your-Agent framework to establish shared methods for identifying, verifying and monitoring AI agents that initiate payments. The companies want merchants and payment providers to determine which entity an agent represents, whether it has customer authority and whether its activity remains within approved conditions. An agent verified by one participating provider would not need to repeat the process with another. The collaboration comes as card networks, digital wallets and technology companies build infrastructure for agentic commerce, where software can search for products, place orders and make payments under user-defined limits. McKinsey projects AI agents could handle $3 trillion to $5 trillion of global consumer commerce by 2030. Mastercard and Visa have separately introduced agent-payment tools using tokenized permissions, authentication and spending controls, while Ant International connects the effort to more than 50 digital wallets through Alipay+. Alipay has begun testing AI-assisted consumer automation in mainland China, allowing users to schedule recurring Starbucks orders and Didi ride-hailing requests. The system places a requested order at the scheduled time but asks the user to complete payment, retaining payment approval with the customer.
