Former CVS executive Helena Foulkes defeated Rhode Island Gov. Dan McKee in Wednesday’s Democratic primary, The Associated Press projected, leading 62.3% to 37.7% with roughly half of the vote counted at about 8:30 p.m. ET. McKee became the first sitting governor anywhere in the country to lose a primary in eight years. Rhode Island has not elected a Republican statewide since 2006, making Foulkes the favorite for November, while Aaron Guckian and Elaine Pelino are competing for the Republican nomination. Foulkes, who lost to McKee in the 2022 Democratic primary, has never held public office but has family and political ties, including endorsements from former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and a political legacy involving her uncle and grandfather, Chris and Thomas Dodd. Her campaign focused on housing, affordability and healthcare access, including higher Medicaid reimbursement rates and an additional 3% tax on incomes above $1 million to help finance more than 20,000 homes.
