Hundreds of cryptocurrency-fraud victims are pursuing recovery after the U.S. government seized $225 million in digital assets linked to an alleged scam operation. Nivie Kaul, who lost more than $8 million in 2022, left her work as a legal consultant and taught herself to trace funds across digital ledgers. After U.S. law enforcement said it could not help, she filed a legal claim in Turkey, prompting an investigation into a professional money-laundering ring. A Turkish court ordered the seizure of a wallet containing more than $100 million in 2023, but U.S. authorities later took custody of that wallet and other holdings during Operation Big Tuna, which targeted an alleged scam compound in the Philippines. The government says the seized funds could eventually be distributed to victims, but determining who qualifies and how much each person receives has become a complicated legal process.
