Sempio shares rose for a second consecutive day after the company announced the retirement of 860,332 treasury shares, equivalent to 29.92% of its 2,875,800 total issued shares. As of 9:23 a.m. on the 11th, the stock traded at 69,300 won on the Korea Exchange, up 13,600 won, or 24.42%, from the previous session. The shares had closed at the daily upper limit the day before. Sempio disclosed the plan on the 9th, valuing the retirement at approximately 37 billion won, compared with an earlier estimate of 36.95 billion won based on the previous closing price. The company began retiring its own shares on the previous day. The Korea Exchange had suspended trading at 4:17 p.m. after the retirement ratio exceeded 10%, with trading resuming at 9 a.m. on the 10th. Sempio is a holding company whose subsidiaries include Sempio Foods, which makes fermented sauces such as soy sauce and doenjang, as well as the cooking essence Yondu. Retiring treasury shares reduces the number of shares in circulation and can increase the value represented by each remaining share; a retirement of nearly 30% is unusually large by South Korean market standards.
