Apple has entered the foldable-phone market with the iPhone Duo, a passport-shaped device priced from $1,999 in the United States and 3.29 million won in Korea. The Korean base price is about 600,000 won above the U.S. retail price and 1.1 million won above Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8, which starts at 2.28 million won in Korea. The device was unveiled in California at the first major product event led by CEO John Ternus, who succeeded Tim Cook on Sept. 1. It has a 7.6-inch internal display, a 5.4-inch external display supplied by Samsung Display, Apple Pencil support and the A20 Pro chipset, but uses Touch ID instead of Face ID. The Duo is thicker and heavier than Samsung’s latest foldables, while Apple is emphasizing its first entry into a category Samsung has dominated alongside Chinese competitors such as Huawei. Preorders begin Oct. 16 and sales start Oct. 23 in Korea and 69 other countries.
