Former Bank of England and Bundesbank officials Jon Cunliffe, Jochen Metzger and Ron Berndsen have joined Fnality’s UK and European governance bodies as the blockchain-based wholesale payments company seeks to expand beyond its sterling system. Cunliffe, the former Bank of England Deputy Governor, will chair Fnality’s UK board. Metzger, a former Deutsche Bundesbank payments executive, has joined the supervisory board of Fnality Europe and is expected to become its chair, while Berndsen, who previously worked on oversight and market infrastructure policy at De Nederlandsche Bank, has also joined the board. Fnality’s regulated sterling payment system launched in 2023 and uses central bank-backed money for wholesale settlement. The company is seeking approvals for dollar- and euro-denominated versions. Fnality raised $136 million in Series C funding in September 2025, taking total funding since its 2019 founding to more than $280 million, and is developing tools for liquidity management, stablecoins and tokenized deposits. Its network has been used for tokenized-securities settlement, foreign exchange and repo transactions as banks build competing digital-money and tokenization infrastructure.
