European investment fund EQT raised its tender offer for Kakaku.com, operator of restaurant review platform Tabelog, from ¥3,571 to ¥3,680 per share and extended the offer period to September 29. The move is the fourth price revision since EQT announced its acquisition in May, after LINE Yahoo and Bain Capital presented a competing proposal. EQT’s new price exceeds the LINE Yahoo consortium’s planned ¥3,640 offer if it secures cooperation from major Kakaku.com shareholder KDDI, or ¥3,520 without that support. Kakaku.com shares closed at ¥3,695 on the 10th, down 0.19%, leaving the market price slightly above EQT’s offer. The bidding contest has drawn attention to Kakaku.com’s consumer platforms, including Tabelog and its price-comparison service, while the next key question is whether the LINE Yahoo consortium will respond with a higher bid.
