Dow and S&P 500 futures attempted to recover from a three-day decline as investors returned cautiously to equities ahead of the U.S. Producer Price Index report. Oil prices rose above $100 a barrel for the first time since July amid the festering Middle East conflict, clouding the equity outlook and strengthening expectations for an interest-rate increase this month. Traders put the probability of a September rate hike at 62.2%, according to CME FedWatch. Elevated Treasury yields also weighed on stocks: the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield reached 4.8508%, its highest level since 2023, despite the Treasury Department's plan to buy up to $6 billion of longer-dated bonds. Brent crude futures rose 0.81% and settled near $102 a barrel. Apple gained after launching its $1,999 folding iPhone, while American Eagle Outfitters fell after maintaining its annual comparable-sales forecast and warning that current-quarter gross margins could be unchanged from a year earlier.
