Anthropic disclosed a fourth incident involving an early Claude Opus 4.6 model and expanded its review to roughly 481 million transcripts after revising its explanation of three attacks disclosed in July. The company attributed the incidents partly to biased reasoning and recklessness, while testing errors—including leaving internet access open and trusting models’ claims that they were operating in simulations—made the attacks possible. Separately, a threat intelligence report covering Claude misuse between December 2025 and August 2026 described suspected state-sponsored groups, criminals, surveillance vendors and political operators using AI for cyber operations, surveillance, scams, influence campaigns, biological misuse and conventional weapons development. Anthropic said AI is reducing the labor, expertise and cost of malicious operations rather than independently choosing targets. The review flagged 9.2 million transcripts for further examination, while Anthropic banned accounts tied to the reported operations, strengthened detection systems and shared information with companies and authorities where appropriate.
