Freddie Mac said the average U.S. 30-year fixed-rate mortgage rose to 6.76% as of Sept. 10, 2026, from 6.71% the previous week and 6.35% a year earlier. The 15-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 6.09%, up from 6.04% last week and 5.50% a year ago. The figures come from Freddie Mac's Primary Mortgage Market Survey, which covers conventional, conforming, fully amortizing home-purchase loans for borrowers making a 20% down payment and having excellent credit. Freddie Mac Chief Economist Sam Khater said borrowers should compare lenders and obtain multiple quotes because doing so can potentially save thousands of dollars.
