Blackstone is reportedly seeking several times more of Google’s Tensor Processing Units than initially planned for its U.S. joint venture with Google, underscoring the investment firm’s expanding focus on AI compute infrastructure. Blackstone, which has more than $1.3 trillion in assets under management, announced in May that it would make an initial $5 billion equity commitment to a venture offering data-center capacity, operations, networking and Google Cloud TPUs under a compute-as-a-service model. The venture targets 500 megawatts of data-center capacity online by 2027, while Reuters reported its total investment could reach $25 billion including leveraged financing. Google would supply its in-house AI chips, as it expands TPU commercialization beyond its own cloud customers. Blackstone has not disclosed the revised procurement volume and declined to comment on specific figures.
