Coincheck will restrict transfers to crypto asset destination addresses newly registered on or after September 15, applying a time-limited hold after registration. Transfers to addresses already registered before that date will remain available, while the restriction period will not be disclosed for security reasons and cannot be shortened on request. The move follows an August 6 joint request from Japan’s Financial Services Agency and National Police Agency to the Japan Virtual and Crypto Assets Exchange Association for stronger anti-fraud controls across exchanges. The request cited losses from social-media investment scams and romance fraud, including victims sending crypto to perpetrators and special-fraud proceeds moving through exchange accounts. It also called for withdrawal limits, monitoring of transactions and access environments, and the ability to impose restrictions promptly when suspicious activity is detected. Coincheck said users should lock their accounts and contact support if they see an unfamiliar destination address registration. Similar measures could spread across Japan’s exchange industry as regulators emphasize user protection.
