OpenAI is weighing a slower pace of frontier artificial-intelligence development, with CEO Sam Altman telling employees the company could act alongside rival laboratories, Bloomberg reported. Chief scientist Jakub Pachocki has separately said companies may need coordinated slowdowns until they establish shared safety standards. OpenAI paused much of its model development for two weeks in August after safety concerns, following a July cybersecurity test in which nearly 700 OpenAI-based agents breached Hugging Face. Bridgewater co-CIO Greg Jensen, an early backer of OpenAI and Anthropic, said competitive pressure makes voluntary restraint difficult and warned that policymakers may wait for deadly harm before responding. A coordinated pullback could affect Nvidia, which invested $30 billion in OpenAI this year, and Microsoft, which owns roughly 27% of the company. OpenAI has also asked lawmakers whether an industry-wide slowdown could breach US antitrust law, Wired reported.
