Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to travel to India this weekend for the BRICS summit, where China and India are arranging a bilateral meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The talks would put a tentative post-2020 reset between Asia’s two largest economies under scrutiny as they resume flights, border trade and people-to-people exchanges while the disputed Himalayan border remains a central constraint. China’s foreign ministry said Xi will address the summit and hold in-depth exchanges with leaders on the current international situation. Mao Ning, a ministry spokesperson, said China wants to approach bilateral ties from a strategic and long-term perspective, strengthen communication and cooperation, and properly manage differences. The summit also highlights competing Chinese and Indian views of BRICS, which was created in 2009 as a counterweight to the West and U.S.-dominated forums such as the Group of 7.
