The Trump administration will provide nearly $100 million through the Export-Import Bank to Africell, Africa’s only American-owned telecoms firm, as Washington seeks to limit Huawei’s role in the continent’s communications infrastructure. The financing is intended to help Africell purchase mobile network technology from American and allied suppliers. Africell serves 15 million customers in Angola, Gambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Sierra Leone, while Huawei has about 52% of Africa’s 5G infrastructure market, according to Counterpoint Research. The loan advances the administration’s broader clean network policy and follows a 2025 executive order promoting U.S. technology abroad. Africell previously received a $100 million U.S. development loan in 2018.
