Yongsan District Office opposed plans under consideration by the Seoul chapter of the Democratic Party of Korea to supply between 13,000 and 20,000 housing units for young adults on damaged sections of Yongsan Park. The district office said the former U.S. military base site should remain a national park under the special act governing Yongsan Park, and warned that development could erode that principle. It also cited benzene detected at 335 times the standard limit in groundwater near Noksapyeong Station and called for a comprehensive soil-contamination survey and safety verification. Prime Minister Han Seong-sook has said residential development of the former Yongsan Garrison would require public consensus, while Democratic Party of Korea Rep. Bok Ki-wang proposed using the site to expand housing supply and ease Seoul's affordability crisis.
