Los Angeles renters are increasingly searching for homes elsewhere, with Las Vegas the top destination among out-of-town rental searches from the city. L.A. residents also account for the largest outside audience viewing rentals in Phoenix, Salt Lake City and San Diego. Zillow Chief Economist Mischa Fisher said relocating could reduce severe rent burdens and leave households with more savings, while UCLA housing expert Shane Phillips linked the outflow to Los Angeles’ shortage of new housing. Only about one in four searches for L.A. rentals comes from outside the region, the lowest share after New York. Riverside is the most popular nearby alternative, attracting more than 20% of its rental searches from L.A. residents and offering about 3% more disposable income on average, according to Fisher.
