Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in New Delhi for the BRICS summit and talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, his first visit to India in seven years. Their meeting, scheduled for Saturday evening, will be their third in three years as the Asian neighbours cautiously rebuild ties damaged by a 2020 military clash along their disputed Himalayan border that killed 20 Indian and four Chinese soldiers. The 11-member BRICS group is also addressing geopolitical tensions linked to the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran, the Russia-Ukraine war and resulting disruption to global energy, trade and transport. China has said it wants to manage differences with India from a strategic, long-term perspective and strengthen cooperation. Trade imbalances, unresolved territorial claims, military deployments and strategic rivalry continue to weigh on relations, while BRICS members face pressure to diversify trade, payments and energy ties.
