Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva maintained a narrow numerical lead over Senator Flavio Bolsonaro in a potential runoff in the October election, according to a Datafolha poll released Friday. Lula was backed by 46% of respondents against 44% for Flavio Bolsonaro, the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, unchanged from the previous week. In a first-round scenario, Lula led with 39%, followed by Flavio Bolsonaro at 35%, Augusto Cury at 6% and Ronaldo Caiado at 4%. If no candidate secures more than 50% of valid votes, the two leading candidates advance to a runoff, a process used in every Brazilian presidential election since 2002. Datafolha surveyed 2,002 people from September 8 to 10, with a margin of error of two percentage points.
