The People Power Party on the 12th identified Kim Seung-won, nominee for Minister of Justice, and Yong Hye-in, nominee for Minister of Gender Equality and Family, as its top priorities for nomination withdrawal. Senior spokesperson Park Seong-hoon said at the National Assembly that public opinion viewing both nominees as inappropriate had exceeded 70%, calling the alleged rejection unprecedented in constitutional history. Park said he believed Yong’s nomination would be withdrawn and that a majority within the Democratic Party of Korea supported doing so, while urging Yong to resign voluntarily first. He described Yong’s press conference on the 10th, where she denied allegations and refused to step down, as a political message aimed at President Lee Jae Myung and Cheong Wa Dae (South Korea’s presidential office). Park also alleged that President Lee’s office may have been compromised by Yong and warned that forcing her appointment would challenge public standards of fairness and common sense. Regarding Kim, Park accused him of stock-price manipulation and said an appointment despite ongoing allegations would reflect a need for a frontman to lead the dismissal of President Lee’s indictment. He criticized the Democratic Party of Korea for refusing to accept witnesses at Kim’s confirmation hearing, warning that the proceeding could become one-sided. Park said the public understood the nomination was intended to secure President Lee’s acquittal and warned that forced appointments would sharply damage Lee’s approval rating.
