Seoul apartment prices have risen for 86 consecutive weeks, surpassing the Moon Jae-in administration’s previous 85-week record, while the cumulative increase reached 17.16% from January 2025 to the first week of September 2026. Mayor Oh Se-hoon said the intensity and geographic spread of the rally warranted a comprehensive review of supply, lending and tax policy. Oh cited a 14.73% cumulative monthly increase during the first year of the Lee Jae-myung administration, compared with 11.68% under Roh Moo-hyun and 9.41% under Moon Jae-in. He highlighted faster gains outside Gangnam, Seocho and Songpa, including increases of 5.8% in Dongdaemun, 5.4% in Geumcheon and 4.7% in Dobong, Gangseo and Gangdong from June through August. Jeonse prices also rose faster in several outer districts. The latest account counted the rally at 86 weeks, while Korea Real Estate Board data cited 83 weeks, reflecting different treatment of holiday periods. Lee Hyung-il, nominee for Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance, said financial investment income tax should be considered after markets stabilize, while virtual asset taxation scheduled for January next year will proceed as planned.
