The number of minors in South Korea reporting annual financial income above 20 million won reached 1,606 in 2024, according to National Tax Service data obtained by Representative Moon Jin-seok of the Democratic Party of Korea, a member of the National Assembly's Strategy and Finance Committee. Under current law, financial income such as interest and dividends exceeding 20 million won must be combined with other comprehensive income for tax reporting. The number rose for a third consecutive year after falling from 3,987 in 2020 to 1,327 in 2021, reaching 1,395 in 2022, 1,461 in 2023 and 1,606 in 2024. The minors reported total income of 166.91 billion won, averaging about 104 million won per person. Financial income accounted for 154.689 billion won, including 137.678 billion won in dividends and 17.012 billion won in interest, while non-financial income totaled 12.22 billion won. Five one-year-olds reported combined financial income of 197 million won, or 39.4 million won each on average. Moon said the figures point to intergenerational wealth transfers and called for stronger oversight of assets held in minors' names, including pre-inheritance gifts and borrowed-name assets.
