Iranian state media reported that an Iranian commercial vessel was struck near Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz, killing one person and injuring four others. Iran’s state-run IRNA quoted the Qeshm governor as blaming a terrorist enemy, while the United States has not commented. A separate vessel was hit by an unidentified projectile and caught fire, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Centre, which said authorities were helping evacuate its crew. The incidents came ahead of planned talks in Oman between Iran and Gulf Arab diplomats on managing maritime traffic, although Bahrain said it would not attend and Iran has downplayed the chances of a breakthrough. Traffic through the strait, which carried about 20 million barrels of oil daily before the conflict, remains about 90% below pre-conflict levels. Separately, Iran-backed Houthi rebels claimed a ballistic-missile and drone attack on a Saudi military base and have expanded toward the Bab al-Mandeb Strait after capturing Perim Island. Saudi Arabia also temporarily closed its East-West pipeline after a drone attack that Baghdad and Riyadh said originated in Iraq. An earlier account cited by Farnaz Fassihi had described three vessels being attacked, including a Qatari liquefied natural gas tanker, and attributed the operation to an unauthorized Iranian hard-line faction; that account remains distinct from the latest state-media reporting.
