The debate over artificial-intelligence risks and governance intensified as U.S. President Donald Trump and Palantir cofounder Joe Lonsdale dismissed catastrophic-outcome warnings, while Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei urged slower frontier-model development, stronger safeguards and international coordination. Trump said the United States was leading China and that whoever wins AI wins, while Lonsdale said leaders were managing the risks and should not frighten the public. Amodei warned that AI swarms could soon control the internet, proposed ongoing access for outside evaluators and shared safety requirements among frontier developers, and said in a CBS interview that he would be willing to transfer Anthropic’s technology to a suitable government coalition. Anthropic was valued at $380 billion in its last funding round, while a prediction market assigned a 2.9% probability to a $600 billion valuation by December 31. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, xAI owner Elon Musk, Google DeepMind founder Demis Hassabis and Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue expressed support for Amodei’s concerns, although he said any slowdown must not allow China to pull ahead.
