Trump said Taoiseach Micheál Martin and tournament winner Shane Lowry had urged him to act. The levy is part of the tariff applied to most European Union imports and was reduced from 15% to 10% in July. The United States accounts for about 45% to 50% of Irish whiskey exports, making it the category's largest market. No formal timetable or legal mechanism for the proposed exemption has been announced. The move would bring Irish whiskey closer to parity with Scotch whisky, which received tariff-free access in July after Trump announced relief for U.K. spirits following King Charles III and Queen Camilla's April White House visit.
