Thailand’s Securities and Exchange Commission has opened consultations on stablecoin (crypto tokens designed to maintain stable value) regulations that would cap covered transfers at roughly $151,000 per person per day in one direction. The proposal would require deposits and withdrawals to use verified accounts, aiming to reduce money-laundering and cybercrime risks. Transfers between regulated operators complying with the Travel Rule (sharing sender and recipient information) would be exempt, preserving flexibility for licensed institutions while applying tighter scrutiny to retail and unverified flows. The consultation reflects Thailand’s broader effort to formalize oversight as stablecoins gain use in payments, remittances and everyday transactions. The SEC is collecting feedback before finalizing the framework, an outcome being closely watched by exchanges and issuers operating in the region. The approach could also influence regulatory expectations elsewhere in Southeast Asia.
