SoftBank Group has secured an $11.87 billion, two-year loan to finance its investment in U.S. artificial intelligence company OpenAI, exceeding its original $10 billion target. About 20 banks committed to the financing, the latest step in SoftBank’s debt-funded effort to invest nearly $65 billion in OpenAI by October. The group has also raised a $10 billion margin loan backed by its OpenAI shares and is considering $10 billion to $20 billion of dollar-denominated junk bonds. Including the latest loan, Bloomberg data shows SoftBank has raised roughly $37 billion through borrowing and bond issuance this year. SoftBank plans to repay $25.9 billion of a $40 billion unsecured loan on September 15, while OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the company will not pursue an IPO this year because it is addressing safety concerns. SoftBank shares fell more than 13% on Monday, and S&P Global Ratings moved the company’s outlook to negative in March.
