SoftBank Group has taken out an $11.87 billion loan to finance its investment in OpenAI, exceeding a previously reported $10 billion target by nearly 20%. Led by Masayoshi Son, the Japanese conglomerate has committed approximately $64.6 billion to OpenAI as of early 2026, building an estimated 13% ownership stake. The latest financing is part of a broader effort to fund the AI company without selling other SoftBank assets. In March 2026, SoftBank secured a $40 billion unsecured bridge loan, directing about $30 billion toward a follow-on OpenAI investment in a funding round that valued OpenAI at approximately $730 billion before new money and totaled roughly $110 billion. By August 2026, SoftBank had added a $10 billion margin loan backed by its OpenAI shares, with Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan among the lenders. In September 2026, it announced plans to prepay $25.9 billion of the bridge loan's remaining balance on September 15. SoftBank's BB+ credit rating is one notch below investment grade, while valuation covenants in the share-backed margin loan could require repayment or forced selling if OpenAI's assessed value falls significantly. Son's record includes an early Alibaba investment that turned $20 million into tens of billions, as well as the Vision Fund's investment in WeWork, which became a warning about concentrated technology bets. SoftBank is also involved in Stargate, an AI infrastructure initiative that expands its role in the generative AI ecosystem.
