South Korean eco-friendly packaging startup Nanu is expanding beyond food containers into electronics and cosmetics with proprietary water-soluble coatings that improve paper packaging’s resistance to water, oil and heat. Founded in 2021, Nanu received separable disposal labeling approval in March this year, certifying that its products can be disposed of as paper. Revenue is projected to rise from approximately 600 million won last year to about 1.3 billion won this year, with more than 98% generated through business-to-business transactions. Nanu supplies customized coating functions to Market Kurly, Goobne Chicken and Hyundai Department Store, and is co-developing phone packaging with Samsung Electronics and cosmetic containers with Amorepacific and L'Oréal. It is also developing Deco Mold, which uses citrus peels and brewer’s spent grain as raw materials, targeting commercialization by year-end. The company’s growth comes as regulation and consumer preferences accelerate the shift from difficult-to-recycle plastic toward recyclable paper packaging.
