Samsung Heavy Industries (010140.KS) has secured contracts worth 1.65 trillion won ($1.22 billion) for six vessels from an Oceania-based client, pushing its commercial ship orders beyond last year’s full-year total. The deal includes four 200,000-cubic-meter liquefied natural gas carriers worth $1 billion and two crude oil tankers worth $200 million. The LNG carriers offer about 15% more capacity than the standard 174,000-cubic-meter model, allowing the same cargo volume to be moved with fewer voyages and improving long-haul operating efficiency. Samsung Heavy’s combined shipbuilding and offshore orders for 2026 have reached $11.7 billion, or 84% of its full-year target, including two floating liquefied natural gas production, storage and offloading facilities worth $4.4 billion. Its shares rose more than 2% after the announcement while the KOSPI index fell 3%. The latest order comes as global newbuilding activity and LNG carrier demand recover, with supply-chain diversification and Middle East geopolitical tensions supporting energy-related investment.
