The Los Angeles Clippers and Toronto Raptors completed their trade involving Kawhi Leonard after months of delay during the NBA’s investigation into alleged impermissible benefits provided to Leonard. Toronto receives the seven-time All-NBA forward, who led the Raptors to their first championship in 2019, while Los Angeles gains Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, two unprotected first-round picks, one first-round pick swap and two second-round picks. The NBA found that the Clippers arranged endorsement and other business opportunities for Leonard, including an alleged $28 million no-show job through team partner Aspiration, to circumvent the salary cap. Clippers owner Steve Ballmer apologized and accepted a one-year suspension, a $30 million fine and the forfeiture of first-round picks from the 2029 through 2033 drafts. The league also ordered Leonard to pay $700,000, suspended executives Gillian Zucker and Lawrence Frank, and banned Leonard’s uncle and former business manager Dennis Robertson for five years. A reported early-stage U.S. Department of Justice investigation remained separate from the NBA proceedings.
