China’s new bank loans returned to positive territory in August, with banks extending 60 billion yuan ($8.95 billion), according to Reuters calculations based on data from the People’s Bank of China (PBOC), China’s central bank. The rebound followed a record 340 billion yuan contraction in July but fell far short of the 400 billion yuan median forecast from analysts polled by Reuters. August lending also remained below the 590 billion yuan recorded a year earlier, as weak demand from households and companies continued to weigh on credit growth. The figures were reported on Sept. 14, with the exchange rate given as $1 to 6.7069 Chinese yuan renminbi.
