South Korea’s National Pension Service will formally incorporate criteria used in recent shareholder meetings into its voting guidelines, clarifying when it supports or opposes proposals. The NPS will also conduct qualitative reviews of asset managers entrusted with its funds and use the results in manager selection, fund allocation and recovery decisions. The measures were announced at a briefing attended by more than 200 executives and staff from 105 listed portfolio companies, the first such gathering since the Stewardship Code was adopted in 2018. The NPS highlighted criteria covering corporate-charter amendments, treasury-share plans, executive compensation and director appointments. Its monitoring system, approved in July, checks 12 items across seven fiduciary principles, while written reviews and on-site inspections of domestic equity managers are planned for October and November. The NPS is reviewing the first eight years of the Stewardship Code and plans to release Stewardship Code 2.0 in the first half of next year.
