BYD plans to introduce its first heavy-duty truck in Europe next year and eventually manufacture all vehicles it sells in the region locally. Stella Li, BYD’s executive vice president and head of international business, said at the IAA trade fair in Hanover on Monday that the company wants to provide fleet operators with financing, solar-powered charging infrastructure, workshops and mobile roadside assistance. Local truck production could help BYD avoid import tariffs, as European manufacturers including Traton’s MAN brand have urged the European Union to impose tariffs on Chinese electric trucks similar to those already applied to Chinese electric vehicles. BYD is also building a passenger-car factory in Szeged, Hungary, with mass production scheduled to begin next year.
