The European Union has extended its individual Russia sanctions regime by seven days after member states failed to reach consensus on whether Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman should remain listed. EU ambassadors moved the expiry date from September 15 to September 22, with Slovakia seeking both men’s removal and France reportedly backing Usmanov’s delisting on national security grounds. The measures cover roughly 3,000 individuals and entities through asset freezes and travel bans and require unanimous approval from all 27 EU members. The dispute is separate from the bloc’s broader economic sanctions, which were extended through July 31, 2027, and include trade, energy and financial restrictions. Although the current disagreement does not concern digital assets, crypto exchanges and DeFi protocols applying sanctions screening to Russian-linked wallets and entities face a broader compliance framework that remains in place.
