HD Hyundai has obtained a technology license and approval in principle from the American Bureau of Shipping for a 100-megawatt (MW) floating power plant, also known as a barge-mounted power plant. HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, the intermediate holding company of HD Hyundai’s shipbuilding division, received the approval on Sept. 15. The certification covers the system’s basic conceptual design, electrical single-line diagrams and stability review. Based on a medium-speed HiMSEN engine, the plant can supply up to 100 MW to data centers, industrial complexes and other sites where land-based infrastructure is difficult to build or electricity demand is concentrated. The company plans to complete remaining design work and follow-up certification before entering the floating power plant market, as AI and data-center expansion increase demand for flexible power infrastructure.
