The offshore yuan remained around 6.71 per dollar on Tuesday, staying below its recent more than three-year high as mixed economic data highlighted the uneven nature of China’s recovery. Fixed-asset investment fell 7.2% in the January–August period, its steepest decline for that span since January–April 2020, while August retail sales growth slowed to 0.4%, a three-month low. The unemployment rate rose to 5.3% from 5.2% in July, reaching a five-month high. Some indicators improved: the house price index fell 3% year on year in August, the smallest decline since December 2025, and industrial output growth accelerated to 5.2% from 4.5% in July. China has started increasing fiscal support after a prolonged decline in public spending, but policymakers remain under pressure to add stimulus as growth risks undershooting the official 4.5%-5.0% annual target for a second consecutive quarter.
