SpaceX has lined up Luxembourg-based Space Cargo Unlimited for a mission targeted for 2028 that Space Cargo says would be Starship’s first commercial customer flight. Space Cargo plans to place its modular BentoBox laboratory inside SpaceX’s Starfall capsule, designed to carry experiments and manufactured materials through orbit and return them to Earth. The mission could carry up to one metric ton of customer payloads, with nearly half of prospective customers coming from life sciences and biotechnology. SpaceX has not publicly confirmed the 2028 timetable and says previous Starship launches were internal missions. Separately, CFO Bret Johnsen has described Flight 14 as Starship’s first revenue-generating flight because it is expected to deploy 26 production Starlink V3 satellites. SpaceX is targeting no earlier than September 22 for Flight 14, with a 75-minute window opening at approximately 7:15 a.m. Central Time, or 12:15 UTC, subject to FAA approval, weather and vehicle readiness. The upper stage is expected to reach roughly 275 kilometers, complete approximately six orbits and splash down in the Pacific Ocean west of Chile. SpaceX’s Space segment generated $1.58 billion in first-half revenue but recorded a $1.20 billion operating loss and $2.23 billion in capital expenditure.
