India’s Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has ordered a detailed investigation into Apple’s warranty practices after complaints that iOS 18 caused display, microphone and other iPhone failures. Consumers were required to pay for repairs that the regulator described as exorbitant, including an estimated 27,900 rupees ($291) to replace an iPhone 15 screen. Apple said its software exclusions are standard industry practice, were disclosed before installation, and do not make it liable for every technical issue following an update. The company said it identified no systemic iOS 18 issue or safety concern in India, and that the CCPA case rests on 75 complaints. The inquiry could test whether warranty terms that exclude software-related faults amount to an unfair trade practice as Apple expands its manufacturing and smartphone presence in India.
