The PGA Tour has finalized the promotion-and-relegation structure for its two-tier competition, which will launch in 2028. The top-tier Championship Series will feature as many as 24 tournaments and 120 players, with the top 90 retaining their places for the following season. Twenty players finishing outside the top 90 will move to the lower-tier Challenger Series, while the top 20 from that series will be promoted. Other Championship Series qualification routes include winning twice during a Challenger Series season, two-year exemptions for Championship Series winners, medical extensions and career milestone exemptions. For the transition to 2028, players who earned a two-year exemption by finishing among the top 30 on the 2026 FedExCup Points List will receive Championship Series membership, while that exemption will not be awarded to the top 30 finishers in 2027. The top 70 players on the final 2027 FedExCup Points List will separately qualify for 2028 membership. The Korn Ferry Tour will remain the Challenger Series' primary route to the PGA Tour, promoting its top 20 previous-season points-list finishers annually. PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp said the model is intended to reward performance, establish a clear progression route and clarify the stakes for fans during individual events and across a season.
