Democratic congressional candidates led Republicans 51% to 43% among likely voters in a New York Times/Siena University poll conducted Sept. 8-13, an eight-point advantage with fewer than 50 days before the midterm elections. Democrats also led Republicans on the economy, 51% to 45%; immigration, 52% to 45%; and health care, 60% to 36%. President Donald Trump’s approval rating was previously reported at 38%, while a Decision Desk HQ average put it at 39.5% late Tuesday, with 58.2% disapproving. The poll showed Democrats ahead among voters earning less than $50,000 annually and raised broader concerns for Republicans, although top political adviser James Blair said there was a path to retaining both congressional majorities.
